2017-2018 Varsity Season Summary

Pittsford Wrestling

2017-2018

This season was a very rewarding season for our program.Coming into this season, expectations were tempered. We graduated 10 seniors from a team that finished 18-10.On top of that, one of our top returners sustained an injury during the preseason that required surgery, and we lost two more starters for the year after the second tournament.

Despite all these setbacks, this year’s team exceeded all expectations finishing with a 20-13 record wrestling an almost identical schedule from the previous season. This schedule included wrestling dual meets against 6 teams who finished in the top 25 of the end of the year state rankings.Furthermore, they finished in 2nd place at the Cortland Duals, 2nd at the ER Duals, and 1st place at the Corning Duals defeating a State ranked team in the finals.

One of the highlights of the regular season was taking our team to Orlando, Florida to wrestle in the Disney Duals over winter break. This trip was a first for our program and something these boys will never forget. Our team came together unlike any other team I’ve coached during this trip and I firmly believe was one of the main reasons we had so much success wrestling in dual meet tournaments. Also during this trip, Senior Collin Regan recorded his 100th career varsity win joining an elite group known as the “Century Club”.

The post season was equally as gratifying. We had 3 class AA Sectional finalist with our lone senior Collin Regan bringing home the Sectional title at 138 pounds. We qualified 11 out of 16 wrestlers entered at Sectionals to the Super Sectional Tournament.3 out of those 11 qualifiers were 8th graders!Furthermore, we had our first State Team representative in four years with 8th grader Nick Sanko earning a wild card at 126 pounds.

In conclusion, I could not be more proud of the progress we made as a program this year. This team; containing only one senior; was faced with a great deal of adversity throughout the season. However, their response to this adversity showed a maturity well beyond their years and has us very excited about the future of this program.

2017-2018 JV Season Summary

From the start of the 2017-2018 season until the very end, our Junior Varsity wrestlers worked hard to improve every day. While our wrestler’s development is ongoing, this winter’s season was a complete success.

Some of the highlights of the season.

1: Every wrestler placed at the Penfield JV tournament. Including four champions which was our best ever showing

2: All of our wrestlers have received varsity matches and many had their 1st varsity win

3: Almost all our wrestlers had winning records and many had their best season to date

4: We had 2 JV county champions and a very successful tournament season.

Wrestling is a sport that builds character. Our sport has a culture that is unique to us. Our team will not find success without commitment, dedication, and hard work. Our JV wrestlers continue to display the commitment that it takes to be great.

1: We’ve had almost 100% attendance in in our off season lifting. All of our regular participants have shown vast improvements in size, strength and explosiveness.

2: Many of our wrestlers are regular attendees at Apex with some going all 4 nights while also competing in a spring sport.

We are building for the future. Our JV wrestlers will all be major contributors to our future Varsity teams.

2017-2018 Modified Season Summary

Thank you to all the Modified wrestlers that made this pastseason a special one.

While there were many young/first time wrestlers in theroom, Coach’s Moore and Schreib realized quickly that the standard forexcellence was high. The energy andenthusiasm was contagious. We’ve neverhad a group of wrestlers put in the extra effort day in and day out like thisgroup; we frequently commented to each other on how hard the wrestlers battled.

As a squad, we had many 1st and 2nd yearwrestlers so it was a slow start, you could tell that many of our wrestlerswere a little apprehensive. As the season progressed, and with the help of thefew veteran 8th graders, we were able to build some momentum. Withmomentum came a sense of pride and progress, it was contagious. While we don’t“officially” keep team scores at the modified level, the squad experienced agreat deal off success. Maybe more important than getting their hand raised, wegrew as a team. This group was constantly cheering for and supporting eachother on and off the mat. The comradery built and memories made in the practiceroom and bus trips this year was awesome to see.

These wrestlers, whether they realize it or not, have taken great strides this year as individuals and as a program. Of course, there remains work to be done, but the future looks great!

We look forward to watching these athletes progress in their wrestling careers.

2017-2018 Youth Season Summary

2017-2018Pittsford Junior Panthers

We had several improvements in the team this year from last year. Our theme for the year was maximum effort. We also worked with the continuum of wrestling in Pittsford with the One Team motto that was adopted for all. There were several of our varsity wrestlers who would help at our practice. Our team also focused on being good teammates on and off the mat.

This year was our second year in the Greater Rochester Youth Wrestling League(GRYWL). We had 4 matches last year and were able to have 8 official dual meets this year (as well as three unofficial duals). In our first year we did not win a match as a team, but this year the Junior Panthers won three of our dual meets. The kids got to travel as far as Brockport and Ovid fort he meets and had one match preceding the varsity match. Zach Gebry and Jaxon Bernas were named as GRYWL All-Stars.

Individually we entered more tournaments this year compared to last year; we are getting the mat time to further our improvement. The team had 16 wrestlers compete at the HFL Novice Tournament. We also had 10 wrestlers at NYWAY state qualifiers this year (compared to one last year) with Kobe Bernas, Adam Gerby, Zach Gerby, Will Ciavarri, Jordan Russ, and Jaxon Bernas qualifying for the state championship. Kobe ab Jaxon each earned a third-place finish.

Next year we are looking forward to continued improvements as well as continued development of good teammates on and off the mat. The Junior Panthers would like tosay "Thank you" and "Good luck" to Ryan Finnell, Sam Higgins, and Andrew Holvey, our sixth-graders who are moving on to the next level.
