(Wednesday, March 1, 2006) — The Pittsford Sutherland senior wins at 130 pounds.
When Kyle Borshoff signed his letter of intent back in November to wrestle next year at American University, he had one goal for this season - to win the state championship.
Borshoff's goal came true last Saturday as he won the 130-pound New York State Division I Wrestling Championship in Uniondale, Long Island.
The two-day championship began with Borshoff receiving a first-round bye on Friday.
In the quarterfinals, Borshoff scored a 10-0 major decision over Pat McCabe from Carmel from Section 1.
Next up in the semifinals, Borshoff scored a 4-1 decision victory over Doug Christensen from Monroe Woodbury form Section 9.
That victory advanced the Pittsford Sutherland High School senior to the finals where he met and defeated Christopher Iorio from Section 11's Sachem North, 8-1.
Also wrestling in the finals were: Brighton's Zack Ellis at 103 pounds, who lost 9-2 to Schalmont's Jeremy Cuomo; Olympia's Phil Lombardo at 145 pounds, who lost to Oxford Academy's J.P. O'Connor, 11-4; Wayne's Josh Patterson at 171 pounds, who won 10-2 over Jake Koshinski from Niagara Wheatfield; and Wayne's Ryan Lamagra at 189 pounds, who won 8-4 over Maciej Jochym from Herricks.
Section 5 won the overall title scoring 246 points. Section 11 was second with 229 points and Section 8 was third with 192.5 points.
